South Taranaki resident and professional boxer, Ali Brooks has taken to Facebook on Wednesday to share his disgust in the effluent that is covering the shores of Ohawe Beach.
He believes the waste may have come from a farm nearby and has managed to follow it up the Waingongoro River but couldn’t locate exactly where it’s coming from.
Ohawe locals have said the smell has been apparent over the past few days also..
In Brooks post to Facebook, he’s stated following contact with the South Taranaki District Council, they have advised there are farms off the Waingongoro river that have consent to discharge treated effluent into the river.
Locals have taken it upon themselves to have the waste tested and talks with local Iwi and Parininihi ki Waitotara (PKW) are underway.
The South Taranaki District Council have been contacted and advised this is a matter for the Taranaki Regional Council who are yet to respond.
In the meantime, information states on the TRC website that residents can contact them on 0800 736 222 in regards to waterway pollution.
