Hawera home destroyed after fire

A house has been destroyed in Hāwera by fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

Crews from Hāwera, Manaia, Eltham, Okato and New Plymouth responded to the blaze, which took 40 minutes to get under control.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire and nobody from surrounding properties were affected.

The former tenant of the property said he couldn’t believe it and that his final inspection was scheduled for Monday.

Neighbors said they could smell smoke in the early hours, and soon realised the home was ablaze.

The cause at this stage is under investigation.
