One-way street will remain in Hawera

Upgrade works on Nelson Street (between Victoria to Union Street) Hawera, started on Monday (15 July) and will continue until completion in November, weather permitting.

The works which are being carried out by Inframax Construction, will formalize the existing one-way street and upgrade the drainage, kerb and channel, footpath and road pavement. The work also includes asphalt surfacing and streetscaping.

South Taranaki District Council (STDC) project manager Tim Moffitt says the work is part of the Council’s wider programme to enhance Hawera’s town centre streetscape and to provide more car parking on the street.

“At times people will experience some inconvenience with parking and there will be times when parts of this project will be done under road closure. However, every effort will be made to get the work done as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption,” says Mr Moffitt.

“We ask people to be extra careful if using this part of Nelson Street and to use alternative streets if possible,” he says.

Mr Moffitt says the completed works will provide a more attractive street, with more parks, set up in a safer manner with raised platforms for pedestrian and mobility scooter crossings and more clearly defined zones between pedestrian and vehicle movements.
