House fire being treated as arson

South Taranaki police are hunting for an arsonist after a suspicious blaze at a Hawera home on Saturday night.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the McGuire St house just after 10pm and firefighters arrived to find the property engulfed in flames.

The occupants of the house were not at the home when the blaze ignited but it’s believed two dogs were inside and it’s believed they perished in the flames.

Hāwera deputy fire chief Merv Watt told Stuff reporter Leighton Keith two engines and an operational support vehicle arrived at the scene first and immediately called for additional resources.
