Ministry to step in following ongoing concerns at Hawera Intermediate

A Taranaki intermediate with three formal complaints laid against it in recent months is to be put under statutory management by the Ministry of Education according to a letter sent to parents of Hawera Intermediate School pupils on Wednesday.

The letter from board of trustees chairman Kimiora Te Wiki outlined that following a meeting with the Board Of Education, the trustees have requested that the ministry appoint a Limited Statutory Manager (LSM) to support the school.

An LSM is generally an experienced educationalist or governance specialist who takes over specified functions and powers of the board the letter reads.

The letter also confirms the day to day running of the school will remain the responsibility of Wendy Sheridan-Smith and her team.

The appointment of the LSM comes on top of a challenging year for new principal Wendy Sheridan-Smith, who left Pukemiro School, near Huntly, in December after three years in her role. In July, damning reports about Pukemiro School were released that revealed it had failed to meet its legal obligations in several areas.
