A man has been arrested and since hospitalised following a 47km, 45-minute police pursuit on State Highway 3 in South Taranaki this afternoon.
It’s believed that police had concerns for the man’s wellbeing after they attempted to stop him leaving a Pātea address about 4.15pm.
The pursuit, which also involved a police helicopter, began with the driver heading northwards towards Hāwera.
The man was hospitalised shortly after being arrested with serious wounds to his lower right leg. A police spokesperson confirmed the wounds were inflicted by a K9 unit.
The pursuit came to an end in Eltham where the man’s vehicle was seen parked on the main streets footpath with all four wheels blown by spikes that had been deployed.
